Returning Student Assignments

Every semester some course evaluations indicate that students in some sections did not receive one paper back before the next one was due (even before a peer response day on the next paper). This is unacceptable. Returning work in a time frame within which students can benefit from instructor feedback and use it on the subsequent assignment is central to the work of an instructor (like meeting classes and following the course outcomes) and students rightly file grade appeals when they were deprived of the opportunity to improve during the semester because they did not receive work back in time to make use of your feedback.

University policy forbids leaving graded student assignments where other people can read them. Therefore, you cannot leave the last assignments outside your door or in the 206 Ross Hall mail room for students to pick up. Instead, tell students to contact you the following semester. If you will not be returning the next semester, leave the following materials with the ISUComm Foundation Courses Staff Assistant in 229 Ross Hall:

  • your grade book, or a copy of all relevant material from your grade book
  • your policy sheet, outlining attendance policy, late paper policy, etc.
  • your syllabus, outlining the entire semester
  • student papers in alphabetical order

If students request grade appeals, the program will need to have the above materials on hand. Tell students that if they want these assignments, they must pick them up by midterm of the next semester (excluding Summer sessions). Therefore, if you are returning, please keep your student papers until midterm of the next following semester. After midterms, you may discard any work students have not picked up.

If you accept hard-copy assignments, please do not allow students to leave their final papers in your mailbox or at your office; you may not find their papers until after grades have been submitted. Final papers should be submitted in person to you during the final exam time.
