Professional Development

ISUComm provides instructor support and opportunities for professional development in the Foundation Courses. This program serves several purposes: (1) evaluating teaching performance, (2) assuring program consistency, (3) recognizing excellence in teaching, (4) sharing teaching practices and theory with colleagues, (5) participating in discussions led by experts in WOVE pedagogy, and (6) accessing online teaching materials.

Term faculty are evaluated every spring. The Associate Chair for Term Faculty leads this evaluation process and will communicate with you about materials you must provide and about your evaluation outcomes. If so indicated, it is important that you work to make changes recommended in your annual review so that the same issue does not appear for more than two years.

Excellence in teaching is recognized by two annual teaching awards, one offered by the Graduate College for teaching assistants and one offered by the department for non-TAs teaching undergraduate composition. Information on these two awards is announced each spring.

ISUComm Professional Development

To realize its vision and fulfill its mission, ISUComm places special emphasis on well-prepared teachers. Teachers contributing to ISUComm at both the Foundation Course and Advanced Communication levels need ongoing education in WOVE pedagogy. We fully recognize that effective teachers are the cornerstone of ISUComm. Watch your email for upcoming ISUComm Innovation Lab events each semester and visit the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) website for a current list of upcoming professional development opportunities and workshops.
