You may choose texts from the lists developed by the ISUComm Foundation Courses committee. A text from the list of rhetorics is required for both foundation courses. A handbook for English 150 is required, but optional for English 250. Below is a list of the approved English 150 and 250 textbooks for the 2019–2020 academic year.

If you are interested in using a text not on the list, please contact the Director of ISUComm Foundation Courses. In selecting texts, please recognize that students should not be asked to spend money for instructional materials that will receive only minimal use. Also, texts will need to integrate the WOVE philosophy by including oral, visual, and electronic modes as well as featuring a pleasing visual format.
Rhetorics, readers, and handbooks on the English 150 and 250 textbook lists are available for perusal in the ISUComm Foundation Communication Courses Office in 229 Ross Hall.
ISUComm Student Guide for English 150 and 250. The ISUComm Student Guide is displayed in the ISU bookstore as a required text for every English 150 and 250 section; it cannot be sold back and it is labeled this way on the shelf and on the text itself. This publication, revised every other year, constitutes a coherent articulation of ISUComm’s purpose and curriculum in the Foundation Courses: it is the programmatic statement for your students that explains what their English 150 and 250 classes will entail, why, and how this is consistent with other English 150 and 250 sections.
Your students need the Student Guide to facilitate their understanding of Iowa State’s progressive multimodal curriculum in your classes, as there is no other text available that is tailored to our unique program. The Student Guide provides programmatic (rather than individual section) information to your students: this is very important to them in terms of understanding overarching goals and pedagogy as well as programmatic policies. The Student Guide describes English 150 and 250 and these courses’ respective assignments; it also provides programmatic information about WOVE objectives (including useful terminology), evaluation, academic honesty, portfolios, visual communication, small-group work, Library 160, student accessibility services, and counseling services.
