It is possible that during one of your class periods, one of your students will require emergency medical assistance. Understanding and following a focused response process will help you deal with these emergencies.
At the point of a medical emergency, suspend all class activities and devote your full attention to the victim. While you should enlist several students to help with the response process, it would be best for most of them to simply leave the classroom.
Assign particular tasks to students who stay to help. Someone should immediately call 911, and then a few students should wait outside the building, at major entrances, to look for first-responders and bring them to the location. After 911 has been called and you know that medical assistance is coming, send a student to alert Deanna Ward in 203 Ross of your emergency at 515-294-2180. Also, while waiting on medical assistance, one student can gather the victim’s belongings in order to clear the area and make the respondents’ job a little easier if they move the victim to a second location. Try to remember all of the details and gather facts from students about the emergency, so you can relay that information to the respondents.
It is very important that victims know they are safe. Speak to them, reassure them that help is coming, and try to keep them conscious.
