Instructors who ask students to critique cultural artifacts and icons may ask students to view films or other materials that “include explicit visual representations of human sexual acts” (see the ISU Faculty Handbook section on “Instruction”). The Board of Regents requires that students be allowed to do alternative assignments if they prefer not to see sexually explicit material. Although this policy addresses only visual materials on human sexuality, instructors should be aware that some students may object to visual or written material that is excessively violent or profane. Before assigning such materials to a class, nontenure or nonpermanent staff should talk to the Director of ISUComm Foundation Courses, who can offer advice regarding potential problems and suggest possible strategies in presenting the material.
