The class Library 160 includes locating information within the Parks Library, using the internet effectively for research purposes, searching the library catalog, finding articles using indexes, and using information with ethical integrity. Students ideally take this course either prior to or while enrolled in their first required English course, but no later than their English 250/250H section. This means that students may take it during English 150 if space is available, but the latest they can take it is concurrent with their 250/250H semester.
In addition to the information that students garner from Library 160, English 150 and 250 instructors may wish to supplement this information by giving library tours, reviewing effective search tools, and demonstrating methods of locating a variety of viable resources. It is also wise to teach and review the following research techniques: paraphrasing, integrating quotes, crediting and citing sources, and using academic integrity. Many instructors require either an annotated bibliography or photocopied or computer-printed pages in which quotes and paraphrases have been highlighted, so they can see how students have interwoven the material into their final product.
