The ISUComm Foundation Courses Committee supports research in our classrooms if it is directly related to the ISUComm Foundation Courses program. If you are a prospective researcher who wishes to collect data in one or more of the classes in the ISUComm Foundation Courses program, you must discuss your plans with the Director of ISUComm Foundation Courses before proceeding with the IRB process. In particular, the proposed research must not consume class time in ways that do not accord with stated program outcomes and must not promise students extra credit for participating. Instructors and/or students may not be recruited without the Director of ISUComm Foundation Courses permission.
Failing to secure the Director’s approval may mean modifications must be made to the research plan, causing delays in IRB approval.
Instructors: If investigators ask to use your class in a research project, they should have a letter from the Director of ISUComm Foundation Courses giving them permission to use your class as a research site. You, of course, are always free to refuse their request to use your classroom. If they do not have a letter from the Director of ISUComm Foundation Courses, please refer them to ISUComm Foundation Courses Director. Please note that only students 18 years or older can give permission to participate in a research project.
