In this tutorial, you will learn how to use the attendance activity on your Moodle course site.<\/p>\n<p>The attendance activity can be useful way to keep track of student attendance within the context of your course site. Advantages of using the attendance activity are that you will have no paper to lose or forget to bring to your class, and your students can keep track of their absences as the course progresses and not have to ask you about their attendance. This activity can also be used with\u00a0<a href=\"#s1\">multiple sections in one class<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Step 1: Enable Editing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><!--include code: [rps-include blog=7911 post=6 filter=\"true\"] --><br \/>\nClick \u201cTurn editing on\u201d at the top of the course site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-127\" src=\"http:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/-plug24-in42-test\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7911\/2017\/02\/Course__English_250__Written__Oral__Visual__and_Electronic_Composition__Section_MG__B__Vance__S17_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"48\" \/><\/p>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Step 2: Creating the activity<\/h2>\n<p>Click on &#8220;Add an activity or resource&#8221; at the bottom of the first block, or under the &#8220;News forum&#8221; at the top of your course page and select the &#8220;Attendance&#8221; activity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2155\/2015\/01\/attendance-add.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3270\" src=\"http:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2155\/2015\/01\/attendance-add-335x400.png\" alt=\"Attendance activity screenshot 1\" width=\"335\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the next screen that pops up, choose your preferred grading method. For example, maybe you don&#8217;t want to assign a grade to attendance. In this case you would select &#8220;None&#8221; and the attendance activity will not appear or be connected in any way to Moodle&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/introduction-to-gradebook\/\">gradebook<\/a>. If you want to connect attendance to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/introduction-to-gradebook\/\">gradebook<\/a>, if you use <a href=\"https:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/introduction-to-gradebook\/\">gradebook<\/a>, you can choose to assign &#8220;points&#8221;. Also, if you have &#8220;groups&#8221; in your course site (e.g., for two sections), you can configure attendance to work with groups selecting by &#8220;Separate groups&#8221;. Click &#8220;Save and return to course&#8221; when you have your desired configurations set.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2155\/2015\/01\/set.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5014 \" src=\"http:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2155\/2015\/01\/set.png\" alt=\"Attendance activity screenshot 2\" width=\"515\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Step 3:\u00a0Adding Sessions<\/h2>\n<p>Now the attendance activity should be located in the first block or week of your course page.\u00a0To set up the activity to keep track of attendance for each class session please follow the following procedure:<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-1 click on the attendance activity (the activity itself, not &#8220;Edit settings&#8221;), and<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-2 choose the &#8220;Add&#8221; category<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">From here there are quite a few parameters that need to be set:<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-1 check the &#8220;Create multiple sessions&#8221; box, (labeled &#8220;1&#8221; in red in the screenshot below)<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-2 set the &#8220;Session dates&#8221; to start and finish at the beginning and end of the semester, respectively<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-3 Time of day that the class meets<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-4 Set &#8220;Duration&#8221; to the length of class meetings (e.g., 1 hour 20 minutes)<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-5 Check the days of the week the class meets in &#8220;Session days&#8221;<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-6 Keep &#8220;Frequency&#8221; at 1 because the class meets on a weekly basis.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-7 click &#8220;add&#8221; session at the bottom of the screen (not pictured below)<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2155\/2015\/01\/attendance-frequency-and-length.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3272\" src=\"http:\/\/support.isucomm.iastate.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2155\/2015\/01\/attendance-frequency-and-length-400x240.png\" alt=\"Attendance activity screenshot 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Step 4: Settings<\/h2>\n<div>From within the attendance activity, go to\u00a0&#8220;Settings&#8221; and you will see the following screen for keeping track of attendance.\u00a0You can manipulate the variables as you see fit in the &#8220;Action&#8221; column.\u00a0Attendance categories can be deleted too. When you are actually in class and want to take attendance, you will click on the green radio buttons seen in the screenshot below.
